History I: The Last 200 Years

Join Michael as we explore the last two hundred years. The beginning of the 19th century brings new challenges and new uncertainty to the Christian church. We learn about the quest for the historical Jesus, the Social Gospel movement, the birth of fundamentalism, and neo-orthodoxy. We conclude with a look at the last few decades in the United Church of Canada.

Iconic photos like Lewis Hine’s “Breaker boys in #9 Breaker, Hughestown Borough, Pa. Coal Co. Smallest boy is Angelo Ross” (1911) animated the Social Gospel movement. Supporters called for assisting unions, profit-sharing, the end of child labour, assistance to immigrants, cooperatives, nationalization of industry, and a social safety net that included free medicine and old age pensions.
